Fitness: August 2016

“Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.”
~ John F. Kennedy

August's Physical Fitness Tip of the Month:

Morning Glory

We're not trying to fool anyone. For most of us, mornings are hard. Getting ready for the day usually takes some effort and the routine tends to get monotonous. So why on Earth would we suggest getting up even earlier to work out? Studies show that physical activity is a great way to give yourself and energy boost and to improve your mood. Plus, it is likely to spark a whole day of healthy choices. According to BodyBuilding, a quality workout has 5 main components. It should:

  1. Be done immediately upon waking
  • Of course, there is always time to use the restroom and have some water before you start, but it is far better to get your body moving as quickly as possible. You don't want to kickstart your body after hours of television and a heavy breakfast.

     2. Contain at least one explosive movement

  • It's a great way to quickly elevate your heart rate and blood flow and enhances muscle building and strength

     3.  Contain at least one static stretch movement

  • Keeps your muscles flexible and from getting too tense.

     4.  Be short and sweet

  • Your morning workout is meant to invigorate you, not exhaust you. Plus, it is meant to be done in addition to your regular workout, not in place of it. So even on your regular gym days, start out your morning with a little cardio, but don't wear yourself out before your day has even begun.

      5.  Fit your aesthetic goals

  • If you want to stay lean, we don't recommend focusing too much on weights. If your goal is to build muscle, try to limit your cardio.
